Local Info
City Facts
Ernakulam is the commercial capital of Kerala and is well connected to the rest of the world by an international airport. It also offers excellent communication facilities, modern amenities and plenty of sight seeing options. Its rich flora and fauna offers a breathtaking experience to its visitors. The district took its form on 1st April 1958, by carving out the areas of erstwhile Travancore, Kochi & Malabar provinces. There is not much distinction between Ernakulam and Cochin which are only separated by the spreading backwaters, with various tiny natural islands that form the subland, and the railway stations. Ferry services to Vypeen, Mattancherry, Fort Cochin, Varapuzha, Willington Island and Bolgatty Island further contribute to the city’s uniqueness. Ernakulam district is a beneficiary of two most important rivers - Periyar and Muvattupuzha.
