40 kms South of Chikmagalur, was once Dwara Samudra, the capital of the Hoysala Dynasty. Despite the city's fall, several large Hoysala temples survive, two of which the Hoysaleshwara and Kedareshwara are superb, covered in exquisite carvings.

King Vishnuvardhana built the Chennakeshava temple in 1117 to celebrate his conversion from Jainism, victory over Chola forces at Talkad and his independence from the Chalukyas of Kalyan.

 
Sringeri

130 kms to the west, on the banks of River Tunga, legend tells that Sringeri was discovered by Shri Shankaracharya as a spiritual place where natural animosities did not exist.

67 kms from Chikmagalur, water cascades from the top of the Chandra Drona hill from a height of 45mts to flow before the Veeradhadreshwara Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. This temple is situated inside a huge rock cave with flowing water.

35 kms from Sringeri is Agumbe in the Western Ghats. The famous Malgudi Days was shot here. The view of the sunset here is world famous.

Festivals

Hindu Festivals


The lives of Hindus are enlivened by a great variety of festivals. While some important festivals are common to all the Hindu communities. Most of the Hindu festivals are socio-religious and seasonal in character. The festivals of Yugadi, Ramanavami, Basava Jayanthi, Ganesha Chathurthi, Deepavali Makara Sankarati, Mahashivaratri and Holi are celebrated in Chikmagalur as in other parts of Karnataka.

Suggi-Habba (Harvest Festival) is popularly celebrated in the rural parts of Chikmagalur for twelve days April - May. The main deities worshipped are Parvati, Shiva and Kumaraswamy. Kolata, Bete- Kunita, Alu Kunita are some of the Kunitas (dances) performed during this festivity.

Antige-Pantige an interesting folk custom is observed during the Deepavali in Chikmagalur. After the pooja in temples, a flame is taken from house to house by groups of men during three days of festival. They joyously sing Antige-Pantige folk songs, which express pious wishes for the prosperity of every family as well as humour, chivalry and compassion. At the end of festival a community dinner is held.

 

Muslim Festivals


The major Muslim festivals observed in Chikmagalur are Id-Ul-Fitar, which marks the conclusion of Ramzan, Bakrid Bara-Wajat and Milad-un-Nabi (Prophet Muhammad's B'day) Urses are held in some of the darghas in Chikmagaur.

 

Christian Festivals


Christians observe Christmas, New Year Day, the feast of St. Joseph, Easter Sunday and some additional saint day festivals.
