Situated on the banks of river Tapti, Surat is the diamond & textile hub of India and has grown to become a major industrial city, home to many multinational companies in the field of petrochemicals, steel, engineering and cement. Once upon a time Surat was also the main port for the pilgrims sailing to Mecca. It is said that Lord Krishna stopped with his cows on his transition from Mathura to Dwarka city and the images of the cow's footprints are still visible to the devotees at a place popularly called "Gai Pagli" (foot steps of cows).
