City Facts
Located on the banks of Vaigai River, Madurai is the second largest city in Tamil Nadu. Known as " the Athens of the East, " the city is globally famous for its jasmines. It has been an important commercial center since 550 A.D. and is also home to many religious and historic landmarks. Madurai has a rich historical background in the sense that Lord Shiva himself performed sixty-four wonders called "Thiruvilaiyadals". As early as the 3rd century BC, Megasthanes visited Madurai. Later many people from Rome and Greece visited Madurai and established trade with the Pandya kings. Madurai flourished till 10th century AD when it was captured by Cholas, the arch rivals of the Pandyas. For the next 700 years, Madurai was under the control of various kings and empire until the late 1700s when it started slipping into the hands of the British East India Company.
