City Facts
The city of Calicut (now, Kozhikode) on the Northern coast of Kerala, is still influenced by the days when the Portuguese held sway over this part of the state. Kozhikode is derived from the Malayalam expression "Koyil Kodu", meaning "fortified palace," which was later anglicised to Calicut. The town was once one of India's finest and busiest ports, and is still an integral part of the international spice trade. Yet, Calicut is sweet as well as spicy. Visitors can wander around the famous Sweet Meat Street and sample a wide range of sweet or savoury delicacies or shop for souvenirs, both new and antique. Or if one has the urge to splurge try the gold showrooms.
