Chikmagalur- Chikka+Magala+Ooru literally means 'Younger Daughters Town'. It is
said to have been given as a dowry to the younger daughter of Rukmangada, a legendary
chief of Sakharayapatna.
Legend has it that Hazrath Shah Jamaal Allah Magatabi, later known as Baba Budan
went to Mecca on a pilgrimage around 1600 AD where, intoxicated by the fragrance
of the coffee flowers, he smuggled seven coffee seeds in the fold of his robes,
out of Yemen. On his return to India, he planted these seeds around his mountain
abode on the Chandradhrona Parvatha, near Chikmagalur, a picturesque hills in Karnataka.
The plant took root and thus was born the Coffee Industry in India. The place later
came to be known as Bababudangiri.
This area now produces coffee so unique; it has no parallel anywhere in the world.
In fact, much of the coffee cultivations in Coorg, Mysore and Nilgiris are descendents
of these early plants. Commercial cultivation of coffee in India began over 150
years ago when the British cultivated plantations across the hilltops of South India. |
